Stream thumbnail checklist

Your stream thumb is the first handshake. Viewers scroll fast. If the thumb is soft, dishonest, or unrelated to the live look, they skip. This checklist is for streamers who want thumbs that get the right people in the room.

Size and crop

Build thumbs at 1080 x 1920 (9:16), same vertical idea as the live canvas. Landscape leftovers get crushed. Important type in the middle third survives more scroll contexts than type hugging the extreme edges.

• Canvas: 1080 x 1920.
• One clear subject: product, set, or show identity.
• Type large enough to read as a tiny phone tile.
• No wall of hashtags baked into the art.

Say what the show is

If it is a break, say break energy. If it is singles, show the kind of inventory. If it is a Surprise Set night, do not fake a 32-team grid. The thumb and the scheduled format should agree.

Misleading thumbs fill the room with the wrong buyers. They leave. Your metrics look worse. Honesty is a fill strategy.

Match the live kit

Best case: thumb color and type match the overlay buyers will see for the next two hours. Random Canva gradients that never appear live feel like bait.

You do not need a new masterpiece every night. A tight template with date, format, and set name swapped is enough once the brand base is right.

Checklist before you publish

1. Readable at phone-tile size.
2. Format matches the schedule.
3. Brand color matches the live overlay family.
4. No critical text under where UI might crowd in other surfaces.
5. You would not be embarrassed if a regular screenshots it.

Common thumbnail fails

• 16:9 art stretched into 9:16.
• Five fonts and a neon explosion.
• Team logos you do not have rights to plaster edge to edge.
• "Huge night" with no product or format cue.
